The video game industry began to thrive in the 1960’s. There were some video games that were rising, and the world was enthralled by this introduction. Companies began pitching in money to come up with games to attract the audience. One such game caught the attention of the entire video game industry and revolutionized it.
What is Super Mario?
Super Mario is an adventure game by Nintendo that follows the adventure of Mario in a fictional mushroom kingdom. The aim of the game is to rescue the princess from the antagonist, Bowser. Mario and sometimes his brother Luigi, bank upon this adventure to cross various levels and scenarios to finish the ultimate mission. During their adventure, the brothers come across various hurdles including cactus trees, tortoises/turtles, etc. Upon coming in contact with them, they lose their life and have to play the particular mission from first. Mario/Luigi ends a level by raising a flag at the fort seen during the end of a particular mission.
Who created Super Mario?
Shigeru Miyamoto designed the game, Super Mario – characters and their traits. Born and brought up near Kyoto, Miyamoto wanted to become a manga artist initially. The love for video games grew inside him after he was impressed with the narrative structure of various manga series and western television shows. Miyamoto designed the Mario game based on human fears. There are people who are scared of falling from a great height, and there are people who are afraid of certain animals. The game was designed in such a way that it conveyed human emotions.
Miyamoto created Mario for this previous game, Donkey Kong. In Donkey Kong, Mario is a carpenter who used to work on buildings. When he created the Mario bros, most of the game was designed around pipes and sewers. It didn’t make any sense for Miyamoto to have the carpenter running around the sewers. Hence, the profession of Mario was changed to a plumber. Mario was considered as a hero of blue-collared workers. Hence, he was given jobs such as a carpenter, plumber, etc.
Why was it named Mario?
Mario was drawn with a big nose and a big mustache. There was no real connection between the appearance of Mario and the appearance of Japanese people. The name was finalized when the Nintendo went to America to sell the game and the owner of the warehouse where Nintendo operated from looked like the character. His name was Mario Segale, and hence they decided to call the character Mario.
